Say Goodbye to PTFE: Why Our PTFE-Free Dental Floss Is the Smarter Choice for Your Smile

“If you’ve ever flipped your Dental Floss box over and squinted at the fine print, you may have noticed three unfamiliar letters: PTFE. They sound harmless. They’re not.”

For decades, polytetrafluoroethylene — better known as PTFE, and closely related to the “forever chemicals” in the PFAS family — has been the go-to coating for slick, glide-style dental floss. It is remarkably slippery, which is exactly why manufacturers love it. But as the science on PFAS has matured, regulators and consumers alike are asking a harder question: should something designed to sit between our teeth, millimeters from our bloodstream, really be made from a material that never breaks down?

The European Union’s answer is increasingly no. And at NEW PHENIX, ours has always been to build a better alternative.

“We didn’t just remove PTFE. We rebuilt the floss from the fiber up — so it performs better because it’s cleaner, not in spite of it.”

The PTFE Problem, in Plain Language

PTFE belongs to the PFAS family of chemicals — often called “forever chemicals” because they accumulate in the environment and in the human body rather than degrading. Emerging research has linked PFAS exposure to a range of health concerns, and the EU’s upcoming REACH restriction is set to dramatically limit their use in everyday consumer products, including cosmetics and oral care.

Yet millions of people still glide a PTFE-coated thread between their teeth every single day. Twice. For life. That’s a lot of intimate, repeated contact with a material regulators are phasing out.

The good news: you don’t need PTFE to get a smooth, shred-resistant floss. You just need better engineering.

Meet the PTFE-Free Dental Floss (E201)

Our PTFE-Free Dental Floss is built around a high-tenacity nylon fiber, precision-textured to glide through tight contacts without fraying, snapping, or shredding. No PTFE. No PFAS. No compromise on the slip and strength that make flossing feel effortless instead of like a chore.

Why “PTFE-Free” Actually Matters to Your Body

Here’s the part most floss brands won’t tell you: your gums are some of the most absorptive tissue in your body. The sub-gingival sulcus — the tiny groove between tooth and gum where floss is meant to reach — is richly vascularized. Whatever sits against that tissue doesn’t just pass through. A measurable fraction of it enters your bloodstream.

That’s why the material of your floss isn’t a cosmetic detail. It’s the difference between a daily hygiene habit that quietly supports your health and one that introduces a persistent chemical you can never fully clear.

Our nylon-based formula sidesteps the entire problem. Nylon is well-studied, mechanically reliable, and — critically — not on any regulator’s watchlist. You get the clean. You skip the chemistry.

⚠ A quick reality check on “glide” floss: That signature slickness of conventional glide floss usually comes from a PTFE coating. If your floss box doesn’t explicitly say PTFE-free, it’s worth asking what’s making it slide.

How to Floss — Properly

1
Cut the right length — Snip about 45–50 cm (18–20 in). Use the built-in cutter for a clean edge that won’t fray.
2
Wrap & anchor — Wind the ends around your middle fingers, leaving a taut 2–3 cm working section. Thumbs guide upper teeth; index fingers guide the lower.
3
Ease in gently — Use a back-and-forth sawing motion. Never snap the floss into the gum — that causes bruising and bleeding.
4
Curve into a “C” — Hug one tooth surface, slide up and down 3–4 times, reaching 2–3 mm below the gumline. Scrape the tooth, not the gum.
5
Re-curve for the neighbor — Without removing the floss, re-curve against the adjacent tooth and repeat. Both surfaces in each gap deserve attention.
6
Rotate to a fresh section — Wind used floss onto one finger to expose a clean 2–3 cm for the next gap. Don’t skip the back molars.
7
Discard & rinse — Toss the used floss — never reuse it. Rinse with water or mouthwash to flush away loosened debris.

The Bottom Line

Flossing is one of the highest-leverage things you can do for your long-term health — the kind of small daily habit that pays compounding dividends for decades. The only question is whether the thread you reach for is working with your body or quietly against it.

With E201, we’ve removed the part that didn’t belong and kept everything that did: the slip, the strength, the gentleness, the clean. That’s not a marketing claim. It’s a material fact — and now, increasingly, a regulatory one.
