Step 1: Cut a piece of floss approximately45–50 cm (18–20 inches) long. For tighter contacts, you may prefer a slightly longer piece for better control. Use sharp scissors or the built‑in cutter on the dispenser to ensure a clean cut without fraying the ends.

Step 2: Wrap each end of the floss securely around yourmiddle fingers, leaving a2–3 cm (about 1 inch) taut working section between your hands. Hold this section firmly with yourthumbs and index fingers – your thumbs should guide the floss for upper teeth, and your index fingers for lower teeth. Keep the floss stretched tight; slack will reduce control and cleaning efficiency.

Step 3: Gentlyease the floss between your teeth using aback‑and‑forth sawing motion. Donot snap or forcibly push the floss into the gum tissue, as this can cause bruising or bleeding. If the contact is very tight, use short, light sawing strokes while gradually moving the floss downward; never jerk or pull abruptly. Stop when you feel mild resistance – you should not feel sharp pain.

Step 4: Once the floss reaches the gumline,curve it into a“C” shape tightly against one tooth surface. Slide the flossup and down 3–4 times, extending it about2–3 mm below the gumline (into the gingival sulcus) to dislodge plaque and food particles. Maintain constant contact with the tooth – do not scrape the gum itself. Use controlled, deliberate strokes rather than rapid movements.

Step 5: Without removing the floss from the gap, release the “C” curve and thenre‑curve it against theadjacent tooth surface of the same space. Again, slide it up and down 3–4 times, reaching slightly below the gumline on that side. This ensures both tooth surfaces in each gap are thoroughly cleaned.

Step 6: After finishing each gap,wind the used floss around your middle fingers to expose afresh, clean section (about 2–3 cm) for the next gap. Repeat steps 3–5 for every interdental space, including theback molars – you may need to angle your fingers or open your mouth wider to reach these areas. Be patient and methodical; do not skip gaps even if they feel clean.

Step 7: When you have cleaned all your teeth,discard the used floss immediately.Do not reuse any portion, as used floss harbours bacteria and loses its tensile strength. Rinse your mouth with water or mouthwash after flossing to wash away dislodged debris.
